Whey Protein
Whey is a milk protein that is water soluble, mixes easily and is rapidly digested, in contrast to casein, which is insoluble, coagulates in the gut and digests more slowly. Whey is one of the two proteins in milk. The International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand on protein and exercise describes it as water soluble, easily mixed and rapidly digested — which is the whole reason it became the default powder.
What is whey protein?
Whey comes from milk. The ISSN position stand contrasts it directly with casein, milk’s other protein: casein is water insoluble, coagulates in the gut and is digested more slowly, while whey is water soluble, mixes easily and is rapidly digested.
The position stand records whey at about 11 percent leucine, and reports greater muscle protein synthesis with whey than with casein both at rest and following exercise.
That is the substance of the difference between the two powders. It is a difference in solubility, digestion rate and amino acid profile — not a difference in whether one is protein and the other is not.
Is whey protein good for you?
The question a source can actually answer is narrower: how much protein does an exercising person need, and does the form matter.
On amount, the ISSN position stand concludes that an overall daily protein intake in the range of 1.4 to 2.0 g of protein per kg of body weight per day is sufficient for most exercising individuals, and that higher intakes of roughly 2.3 to 3.1 g/kg/day may be needed during caloric restriction.
Those figures are for total daily protein from all sources. Food counts toward them. A powder is a convenient way to reach a number, not a separate requirement on top of it — and someone already reaching that range from food is not short of anything a scoop would supply.
When should I take whey protein?
The position stand is more relaxed on this than the marketing around it. It states that the optimal period in which to ingest protein is likely a matter of individual tolerance, since benefits are derived from either pre- or post-workout ingestion, and that the anabolic effect of exercise is long-lasting — at least 24 hours.
A narrow window immediately after training is not what this source describes.
What does this source not cover?
Two things worth naming, because their absence is easy to misread.
The position stand presents evidence on efficacy and does not include an explicit safety statement about higher protein intakes in healthy adults. Absence of a warning in a document about performance is not the same as a safety finding.
It also does not address lactose content, filtration grades such as concentrate versus isolate, or third-party testing of finished products. Those are label questions this entry cannot answer from this source, and it does not attempt to.
